Turkish TV gameshow looks to convert atheists

advertisement

ISTANBUL (Reuters) - What happens when you put a Muslim imam, a Christian priest, a rabbi and a Buddhist monk in a room with 10 atheists?

Turkish television station Kanal T hopes the answer is a ratings success as it prepares to launch a gameshow where spiritual guides from the four faiths will seek to convert a group of non-believers.

The prize for converts will be a pilgrimage to a holy site of their chosen religion -- Mecca for Muslims, the Vatican for Christians, Jerusalem for Jews and Tibet for Buddhists.

Who's leading the conversation?
This visualization below allows you to see the impact that each user has on the current conversation. The top row contains the group of users who have had the most impact, the 2nd row the group of users who have had the 2nd most impact (et cetera). Users with similar impact are grouped together, and the average score of the group is shown to the left of the group. The author of the article is also shown on the left, in their corresponding group. Each user's score is based on the number of comments the user has made plus the number of votes their comments have received. The scores are calculated relative one another, so while their absolute value is not particularly important, their relative difference does indicate a larger difference in impact on the conversation.

I don't know who will win but I'd lay odds the losers will be "disappeared" by the Taliban as soon as they leave the taping--

".... And as a consolation prize, all non-winners will receive

an all expense ONE-WAY TRIP TO TORA BORA to meet you know who, IN PERSON.

All contestants are responsible for taxes & must meet eligibility requirements."

The premise behind the show is that atheists are evil. I'm sure that will endear itself to a lot of potential self-respecting atheists and encourage them to appear on the show. I'd guess the few atheists that do live in Turkey have come to that belief through rather calculated realizations considering the overarching predominance of religion there, and a few hadiths or Bible verses won't do much to change their minds.
