SAN DIEGO (AP) - A five-day trip aboard the Carnival Elation has turned into a high-seas murder mystery when a passenger was arrested after returning to port and accused of killing his wife three days into the luxury cruise to Mexico.
Robert McGill, of Los Angeles, was taken into custody Thursday from the Carnival Elation cruise ship more than six hours after it returned to San Diego. He will be charged in the murder of his wife Shirley, who was found dead Tuesday evening in the couple's cabin, said Keith Slotter, a special agent in charge of the FBI's San Diego bureau.
McGill's first court appearance and an autopsy of his wife's body were expected Friday.
Slotter said the first hint of trouble aboard the luxury oceanliner came when a passenger contacted ship's security Tuesday and expressed concern that Shirley McGill might be dead.
Crew members went to the cabin and found her body, but Robert McGill was not in the room. Slotter wouldn't say why the passenger who notified security was concerned, but said several hours may have passed between the death and the body's discovery.
