The mother of a 21-year-old Omaha man who is accusing a former Millard middle school teacher of sexual assault stands by her son's story.
The 55-year-old woman testified Wednesday afternoon that she believes her son's allegations and said she became suspicious and uncomfortable when her son and the now-former teacher became "a little too chummy."
Stephanie Draper, 36, of Blair, Neb., is accused of sexually assaulting the woman's son in 2002, when he was a 14-year-old eighth-grader at Millard North Middle School, where Draper taught. Draper is charged with first-degree sexual assault of a minor, a crime punishable by up to 50 years in prison.
The former student testified Tuesday that Draper had seemed really nice when he first met her at school. She picked him up and bought him dinner at the Olive Garden. She asked for his cell phone number and called him to see how he was doing.
A few weeks later, he testified, she invited him over to her house to watch a movie. He said she eventually made advances and sexually assaulted him, he said.
The former student's mother testified Wednesday that she was "shocked" when her son told her about the allegations in January 2008.
If she allowed the teacher to date her son, she can't be all that shocked. She basically set him up for trouble.
Damn it!... Where were teachers like that when I was 14?????
