The Baltimore Sun is reporting that a federal criminal investigation is under way out of the U.S. Attorney's office in Baltimore into military use of a drug initially hailed as a lifesaving therapy to stop bleeding from trauma. The drug is marketed under the name NovoSeven, by the Danish drug company Novo Nordisk. NovoSeven is a Recombinant form of a natural occurring component found in the blood known as Coagulation Factor VII. Factor VII is indicated for the treatment of bleeding episodes in certain hemophilia A or B patients, and has been used in Trauma Centers to treat patient's who have had massive blood loss and transfusions rendering their natural clotting factors ineffective.

The investigation likely will focus on the non-FDA approved use of a drug by the military which has turned out to be ineffective and potentially lethal.
